Let \(X\) be a topological space. A continuous map \(T\) from \(X\) into itself is called topologically transitive (resp.,\ strongly mixing) if for each pair of nonempty open subsets \(U\) and \(V\) of \(X\), there is a positive integer \(i\) such that the iterate satisfies \(T^{i}(U) \cap V \neq \emptyset\) (resp., \(T^{i}(U) \cap V \neq \emptyset\) for each \(i \geq i_0\)). \(T\) is called weakly mixing if \(T \times T\) is topologically transitive on \(X \times X\). The authors prove the following results, that are related to classical results of Furstenberg and recent ones by Bès and Peris: Let \(X\) be a complete separable metric space and let \(T\) be a continuous map. (a) \(T\) is weakly mixing if and only if there is a sequence \((m_k)_k\) of positive integers such that each subsequence of \((T^{m_k})_k\) is topologically transitive, and (b) \(T\) is strongly mixing if and only if for every subsequence \((n_j)_j\) of natural numbers, the sequence \((T^{n_j})_j\) is topologically transitive. In the last section, a deep result of \textit{P. S. Bourdon} and \textit{N.\,S.\thinspace Feldman} [Indiana Univ.\ Math.\ J.\ 52, 811--819 (2003; Zbl 1049.47002)] is used to study the connection between the structure of the orbit of a continuous linear operator \(T\) on a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space \(X\) in an open subset of \(X\) and the hypercyclicity of \(T\).
