\textit{J. C. Alvarez Paiva} and \textit{E. Fernandes} [Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 4, 91--100 (1998; Zbl 0910.53044)] extended the classical Crofton formula to projective Finsler space by showing that the Holmes-Thompson volume [in: \textit{J. C. Alvarez Paiva} and \textit{A. C. Thompson}, A Sampler of Riemann Finsler Geometry. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Publications 50, 1--48 (2004; Zbl 1078.53072)] of a compact submanifold can be calculated by an analogue of the Crofton formula. The author puts these results into a more general setting of valuations. Let \(V\) be an oriented finite-dimensional vector space and \(\Psi\) be a real-valued function defined on compact convex (compact subanalytic) subsets of \(V\). The function \(\Psi\) is said to be a (subanalytic) valuation if for every compact convex (subanalytic) \(K,L\subset V\) such that \(K\cup L\) is also compact convex (subanalytic) the following additivity property holds: \(\Psi\left( K\cup L\right) +\Psi\left( K\cap L\right) =\Psi\left( K\right) +\Psi\left( L\right) \). The main result gives a current representation of a valuation with a smooth Crofton formula. A number of applications to Finsler geometry is given.
