The authors are concerned with the construction of block ILU preconditioners for block tridiagonal linear algebraic systems. Significant tools are bordering techniques for the computation of approximate inverse factors, i.e., approximate inverses of pivot blocks. Numerical results are given for systems arising from the discretization of linear second-order elliptic boundary value problems.
