The author proves the following theorem: If \(D\) and \(D'\) are two torus invariant \(\mathbb Q\)-Cartier divisors on a projective, \(n\)-dimensional toric variety \(\neq\mathbb P^n\), then \(D+D'\) is very ample whenever \(0\geq D'\geq K\) and \(D\) intersects the torus invariant curves with multiplicity at least \(n+1\). Since it is not clear what very ampleness means for \(\mathbb Q\)-Cartier divisors, this theorem comes in two flavours: In the weaker version, one just assumes that \(D+D'\) is a decent Cartier divisor. On the other hand, in the context of toric varieties, the author uses a \(\mathbb Q\)-version of the usual combinatorial very ampleness condition to make the above claim precise. The proof is combinatorial, too. Payne shows that polyhedra with sufficiently long edges contain enough lattice points even after moving the facets inwards by a unit distance. Fujino developed a similar theorem (showing nefness under weaker assumptions). In the present paper, Payne shows that his method also provides a proof for Fujino's theorem (but not the other way around). Both theorems together imply Fujita's very ampleness conjecture for toric varieties.
