The authors study Cartesian decompositions preserved by quasiprimitive permutation groups \(G\) acting on \(\Omega\). They introduce the following concept: A Cartesian decomposition \(\mathcal E\) of \(\Omega\) for \(G\) is said to be a `blow-up decomposition' if \(\mathcal E\) is transitive, normal and \(M^\Gamma=\text{Soc}(G^\Gamma)\) for all \(\Gamma\in\mathcal E\) where \(M\) is a transitive normal subgroup of \(G\). Such a blow-up decomposition allows \(G\) to be embedded into a wreath product in product action, following ideas of L. G. Kovács for primitive groups. Several interesting applications to quasiprimitive and innately transitive permutation groups are obtained.
