Let \(D\) be a nonempty closed convex subset of a Banach space \(E\) and \(T:D\rightarrow D\) be a mapping. For any given \(x_0,y\in D\), define the following modified iterative sequence of Halpern--Ishikawa type \(\{x_n\}\) by \[ x_{n+1}=\alpha_nx_n+(1-\alpha_n) T^n y_n,\,\, y_n =\beta_n x_n+(1-\beta_n)T^n x_n,\;n \geq 0,\tag{1} \] where \(\{\alpha_n\}\) and \(\{\beta_n\}\) are two sequences of real numbers in \([0,1]\). The main result of the paper (Theorem~1) is a convergence theorem for the iterative method (1) in the case where \(E\) is a real Banach space with uniformly Gâteaux differentiable norm, \(D\) is a nonempty closed convex subset of \(E\), and \(T:D\rightarrow D\) is a \(k_n\)-asymptotically nonexpansive mapping with nonempty fixed point set. Several technical conditions on \(\{\alpha_n\}\) and \(\{k_n\}\) as well on an auxiliary sequence \(\{z_n\}\) are assumed. Under these assumptions, the strong convergence of \(\{x_n\}\) is shown to be equivalent to the boundedness of the sequence \(\{y_n\}\), provided that \(\{x_n\}\) is an approximate fixed point sequence of \(T\), that is, \(\left\| x_n-Tx_n\right\| \rightarrow 0\) as \(n\rightarrow \infty\).
