The authors propose a new approach for on-line batch process monitoring and diagnosing based on Fisher discriminant analysis. The developed batch process monitoring scheme consists of two phases: 1) off-line preparation phase and 2) on-line monitoring phase, each phase including five steps described in detail. The efficiency of this approach is illustrated by its application to a modular simulator for fed-batch penicillin fermentation. Results of this simulation have shown that the proposed Fisher discriminant analysis method for on-line monitoring is more efficient than multi-way principal component analysis.
