The author describes the main ideas and summarizes the results concerning the existence of solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems of the form \(-\Delta u+a(x)u=|u|^{p-2}u\), \(u\in H_0^1(\Omega)\), in an unbounded domain \(\Omega\subseteq \mathbb R^N\) (\(N\geq 3\)). Different techniques in obtaining the existence of solutions for such problem are presented and compared. In the paper we find: symmetric and nonsymmetric problem solvable by minimization, other problems not solvable by minimization methods, the existence of infinitely many solutions.
