Let \(G=\text{SL}_n\). Let \(\Gamma\) be an arithmetic subgroup of \(G({\mathbb Q})\). Fix an irreducible unitary representation \(\sigma\) of the maximal compact subgroup \(K=\text{SO}(n)\) of \(G({\mathbb R})\). Let \(L^2_{\text{cusp}}(\Gamma\backslash G({\mathbb R}),\sigma)\) be the Hilbert space of cusp forms for \(\Gamma\) on \(G({\mathbb R})\) with \(K\)-type \(\sigma\). Consider, in this Hilbert space, the selfadjoint operator \(\Delta_{\sigma}\) defined by \(-\Omega\), \(\Omega\) being the Casimir of \(G({\mathbb R})\). This operator is bounded from below and has a pure point spectrum with finite multiplicities. Denote by \(N^{\Gamma}_{\text{cusp}}(\lambda, \sigma)\) the sum of the dimensions of the eigenspaces of \(\Delta_{\sigma}\) for the eigenvalues \(\leq\lambda\). For principal congruence subgroups \(\Gamma\) it is proved in this article that \(N^{\Gamma}_{\text{cusp}}(\lambda, \sigma)\) is asymptotically equal to \(c \lambda^{d/2}\) with \(d=\text{dim}(G({\mathbb R})/K)\) and \(c=c_d \text{dim}(\sigma) \text{vol}(\Gamma\backslash G({\mathbb R})/K)\), where \(c_d\) is a number depending on \(d\) only. If \(\sigma\) is the trivial representation of \(K\), this is Weyl's law for the upper half-plane. This result can be reformulated in terms of cuspidal automorphic representations of \(\text{GL}_n({\mathbb A})\). Fix an irreducible unitary representation \(\sigma\) of \(K_{\infty}=\text{O}(n)\) and an open compact subgroup \(K_f\) of \(\text{GL}_n({\mathbb A}_f)\). Then Arthur's trace formula is applied to a family \((\Phi_t)_{t>0}\) of functions on \(\text{GL}_n({\mathbb A})\) which, at the infinite place, is given in terms of a certain heat kernel. The asymptotic behaviour of each side of the trace formula for \(t\rightarrow 0\) is studied. For the spectral side this involves estimation of logarithmic derivatives of intertwining operators. On the geometric side weighted orbital integrals are estimated. Comparison of the asymptotic behaviour of both sides gives the adelic version of Weyl's law, which contains corresponding results for cusp forms on \(G({\mathbb R})\) for congruence subgroups.
