The paper deals with the phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model by means of a mathematically rigorous perturbation theory. The Bose-Hubbard model is carefully defined. The authors are interested in the situation with a small tunneling amplitude \(t\) and a small chemical potential \(\mu\). The critical line between Mott and non-Mott behavior to lowest order in the ratio \(\frac{t}{\mu}\) is constructed. They study the transition between the Mott insulator and the conjectured Bose-Einstein condensate in a hard-core Bose-Hubbard model. For \(\mu<-2dt\), there exists \(\beta_0\) such that if \(\beta > \beta_0\), it is proved that the pressure is real analytic in \(\beta,\;\mu\); and the inequality \(\rho(\beta,\mu) < e^{-a\beta}\) is satisfied. The existence of domains with and without Mott insulator is shown. The authors prove the absence of Mott insulating phases away from the critical lines, by establishing bounds on the density of the system. They consider the main theorem of \textit{D. Ueltschi} [Mosc. Math. J. 4, 511--522 (2004; Zbl 1070.82002)] for the convergence of cluster expansions.
