The paper uses the minimizers of the Chen-Lubensky free energy as a way to describe the effect of temperature and material properties on the phases of stable liquid crystal configurations. One considers more especially long thin molecules of liquid crystals in which the local order is mainly caused by neighbourhood interactions, and one analyzes the transition regime when the temperature decreases. One obtains estimates for the transition region separating phases.
