The author studies existence and local stability of a periodic solution of the Duffing type equation \[ x'' + c x' + g(t,x) = h(t). \] The main result is that if (i) \(g'_x(t,x) < \pi^2/T^2 + c^2/4\) and (ii) there is a periodic function \(\alpha(t)< g'_x (t,x)\) such that the average value \(\bar \alpha\) of \(\alpha(t)\) satisfies \(\bar\alpha> c^2/4\), then this equation with smooth \(g\) has an asymptotically stable periodic solution and the convergence of the nearby solutions to this periodic solution is characterised by the rate of decay \(c/2\) for \(c>0\). A similar result is proved for the equation \[ x'' + c x' + a(t)x^+-b(t)x^- = h(t). \]
