The authors show that the periodic solution of a strongly nonlinear oscillator can be written as a simple cosine function by a suitable transformation of time. This idea enables the stability of strongly nonlinear normal modes in multidegree of freedom systems to be investigated by standard procedures such as harmonic balance.
