Let \(G\) be a locally compact group with Haar measure \(\lambda\). The space \(L_p ( G)\), \(1<p <\infty\), is closed under convolution only if \(G\) is compact. Let \(w\) be a positive measurable function on \(G\). The weighted \(L_p\) spaces with weight \(w\) are defined as follows: \[ L_p(G,w) = \{ f|w: f \in L_p(G) \}, \quad \|f\|_{p,w} = \left(\int_G | fw| ^p d\lambda \right)^{1/p}. \] In this paper the author gives a condition on \(w\) so that the weighted space \(L_p (G,w)\) is a Banach algebra with respect to convolution. In particular, let \(q = p/(p-1)\) and suppose that there is a constant \(K\) such that \(w\) satisfies \[ w^{-q} \ast w^{-q} \leq Kw^{-q}. \] The author then proves the following theorem: Let the above condition hold for a weight \(w\). Then the space \(L_p(G,w)\) is a Banach algebra with respect to convolution. If, moreover, \(G\) is abelian, then the algebra is commutative. Counterexamples are given to show that the converse of the theorem is not true. Assume that \(G\) is abelian for the rest of this review. The following theorem is also proven: If the space \(L_p(G,w)\) is a convolution algebra, then its spectrum can be identified with the subset of \(L_q(G, w^{-1})\) consisting of continuous homomorphisms \(\chi \colon G \mapsto {\mathbb C}\setminus \{ 0 \}\). Each character of this algebra can be expressed via the corresponding function \(\chi\) by the formula \[ X(f) = \int_G f \chi\,d\lambda, \quad f \in L_p(G,w). \] The author concludes the paper by showing that if \(L_p(G, w)\) is an algebra, then: (i) it is semisimple; (ii) its spectrum contains a homeomorphic image of \(\widehat{G}\), the dual group of \(G\); (iii) it is unital if and only if \(G\) is discrete.
