Let \(A\) denote a unital normed algebra and let \(X\) be a Banach \(A\)-bimodule. A linear mapping \(\mu:A\to X\) is called a \textit{generalized derivation} if there exists a derivation \(\delta: A\to X\) such that \[ \mu(ab)=a\mu(b)+\delta(a)b,\qquad a,b\in A. \] As a main result, the stability of the generalized derivations is proved. Assume that \(f:A\to X\) satisfies \(f(0)=0\) and, with some mapping \(g:A\to X\), the inequality \[ \| f(\lambda a+\lambda b+cd)-\lambda f(a)-\lambda f(b)-cf(d)-g(c)d\| \leq\varphi (a,b,c,d) \] holds for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\), \(| \lambda| =1\) and all \(a,b,c,d\in A\). Then, under some assumptions upon the control mapping \(\varphi:A^4\to [0,\infty)\), it is proved that the mapping \(f\) can be uniquely approximated by a generalized derivation \(\mu:A\to X\). For a unital Banach algebra \(A\), a mapping \(f:A\to A\) is called an \textit{approximately generalized derivation} if \(f(0)=0\) and, with some mapping \(g:A\to A\) and a positive number \(\varepsilon\), it satisfies the inequality \[ \| f(\lambda a+\lambda b+cd)-\lambda f(a)-\lambda f(b)-cf(d)-g(c)d\| \leq\varepsilon \] for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\), \(| \lambda| =1\) and all \(a,b,c,d\in A\). As a consequence of the main result, it is proved that an approximately generalized derivation \(f\) is a generalized derivation and the corresponding mapping \(g\) is a derivation.
