The paper treats the question of lifting strong commutants of unbounded subnormal operators, focussing on the subclass of unbounded quasinormal operators. After an introduction into the topic and a preliminary section containing the main tools of the investigation, the minimality of a normal extension of a quasinormal operator is analysed. It is shown that every quasinormal operator has a minimal normal extension of cyclic type. The main result gives the construction of a special minimal normal extension of a quasinormal operator. Then, properties of minimal normal extensions are studied. There are subnormal operators wich have no tight normal extension. It is shown that any minimal normal extension of spectral type of a quasinormal operator is tight. The main purpose of the paper is to state an unbounded version of Yoshino's criterion on the lifting of the commutant of a quasinormal operator. This is done in the sixth section, devoted to strong commutant lifting, while the last section of the paper analyses symmetric commutant lifting.
