Let \({\mathcal R}_s=\{\xi:| \xi| \leq s\}\) be the disk of radius \(s\) in the complex \(\xi\)-plane and define the Banach space \({\mathbf B}_s\) as the set of functions \(\{f(\xi): f(\xi)\) is analytic in \({\mathcal R}_s\) and continuous on \(\overline{{\mathcal R}_s}\}\) with norm \(\|f\|_s=\sup_{{\mathcal R}s}| f(\xi)| \). Using a theorem of Nirenberg on an abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski problem on \({\mathbf B}_s\), the author proves the existence and uniqueness locally in time of the classical Rayleigh-Taylor problem with analytic initial data in the disk \({\mathcal R}_r\) containing the unit disk. Small initial data are not required. Based on the same conformal formulation of the two-dimensional unsteady deep water-wave problem, the existence and uniqueness of an analytic solution locally in time of this problem is proved. The proof is strictly parallel to that of the classical Rayleigh-Taylor problem.
