Let \(V\) be a vector space over a skewfield \(\mathbb{F}\) and \(U\) a subspace of \(V\). The authors obtain normal forms for the following bilinear or sesquilinear forms, \[ U\times V \rightarrow \mathbb{F}\quad \text{and} \quad V/U\times V \rightarrow \mathbb{F}. \] They first solve a more general problem, namely the canonical form problem for certain block matrices which they call bangles and then get the desired result by specialization.
