Let \(K\) be the function field of a nonsingular, projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(0\). The authors prove an effective version of Schmidt's subspace theorem for homogeneous polynomials (instead of linear forms) over \(K\). For this purpose they need the effective version of Schmidt's classical subspace theorem for linear forms, proved by the \textit{second author} [Math. Z. 246, No. 4, 811--844 (2004; Zbl 1051.11041)], an effective version of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz and an effective bound for Hilbert functions. As an application of this general result, Theorem 2 shows how the \(S\)-integral solutions of a general Thue equation can be found effectively.
