The paper under review mainly concerns homogeneous quotient modules of the Hardy module on the bidisk. Given a tuple of commuting operators \((T_1, \dots, T_d)\) acting on a Hilbert space \(H\), there is a natural way to make \(H\) into a \({\mathbb C}[z_1, \dots, z_d]\)-module as \(p\cdot h = p(T_1, \dots, T_d)h\), where \(p\in{\mathbb C}[z_1,\dots,z_d]\), \(h \in H\); cf.\ [\textit{R. G. Douglas} and \textit{V. I. Paulsen}, ``Hilbert modules over function algebras'' (Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series 217, Longman Scientific \& Technical, Harlow) (1989; Zbl 0686.46035)]. The Hilbert module is called essentially normal if the self-commutators \(T_k^*T_j-T_jT_k^*\) are all compact; cf.\ [\textit{W. B. Arveson}, J.~Oper. Theory 54, No. 1, 101--117 (2005; Zbl 1107.47006)]. In the paper under review, the authors characterize the essential normality of homogeneous quotient modules of the Hardy space \(H^2({\mathbb D}^2)\) of the bidisk. They also describe the essential spectrum for a general quotient module and consider the \(K\)-homology invariant defined in the case of homogeneous quotient modules on the bidisk. The reader is also referred to parts I and II of this series, which have only been published as preprints so far.
