The concertina pattern: a bifurcation in ferromagnetic thin films (Q885882)

The authors study magnetic domain structures in thin ferromagnetic films induced by external magnetic fields and resulting from spin-spin interactions. They found four different asymptotic regimes for nucleation with one of them allowing for an oscillatory unstable mode with a concertina pattern. The paper contains a detailed mathematical treatment of the problem based on the variational method applied to a model energy funcional. A subsequent numerical simulation assumes a discrete approximation for the magnetization on an equidistant grid.
