The authors investigate state-dependent (sd) symplecticity and area preserving numerical methods. They introduce the sd-symplecticity and exploit it to state nearby symplecticity in symmetric non-symplectic one step methods applied to Hamiltonian systems whose solution display some symmetries with respect to an equilibrium point. The authors show two examples to explain that the features discussed may not be simply retrieved by exploiting a conjugate symplecticity argument. They present two open questions: whether the sd-symplecticity property fully characterizes symmetric methods and whether one can always construct a measure that is exactly preserved by the flow of symmetric methods.
