A variational multiscale approach for large eddy simulation of compressible turbulent flows is presented using a modal spectral element method. The performance of the method is assessed by computing a fully developed turbulent channel flow. The effect of subgrid scale modelling and the influence of spatial resolution are studied in order to obtain reasonable low-order statistics of turbulent flow. It is shown that the accuracy of the simulation is increasing when the dynamics of the near-wall coherent structures is computed without subgrid scale model.
