The paper under review studies the relationship between restricted Grassmannians and the recently initiated theory of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces (a Banach Lie-Poisson space is a Banach space \(\mathfrak{b}\) whose topological dual \(\mathfrak{b}^*\) is endowed with the structure of a Banach Lie algebra such that the subspace \(\mathfrak{b}\) of \((\mathfrak{b}^*)^*\) is invariant under the corresponding coadjoint action). The first main result of the paper essentially asserts that a restricted Grassmannian is symplectomorphic to a symplectic leaf in a Banach Lie-Poisson space, which is the predual to a \(1\)-dimensional central extension of a certain restricted Lie algebra. It is shown that the underlying Banach space can even be chosen to be a Hilbert space. In the second main result of the paper the authors prove the smoothness of certain adjoint and coadjoint orbits of the restricted unitary groups, and point out several pathological properties of the coadjoint algebra.
