Order-theoretic properties of locally connected topologies are investigated. If a set \(X\) is endowed with a topology \(\tau\) then a total preorder \(\preceq\) on \(X\) is said to be continuously representable if there exists a real-valued order-embedding on \(X\) that is continuous with respect to the topology \(\tau\) and the usual topology on the real line. A topology \(\tau\) on \(X\) is said to have the continuous representability property (CRP) if every \(\tau\)-continuous total preorder \(\preceq\) on \(X\) admits a continuous representation. Each locally connected, separable topology is shown to have CRP. Under the Souslin Hypothesis (SH) every locally connected topological space which satisfies ccc has CRP, while if SH does not hold there exists a locally connected topological space which has ccc but fails to satisfy CRP. The authors also study the problem of finding semicontinuous representations and consider generalizations of locally connected topologies. For instance they prove a continuous representation theorem for topological spaces that are locally connected im kleinen.
