Let \(K\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>0\). Let \(G\) be the linear algebraic group \(\text{GL}_n\) over \(K\), or its Dipper-Donkin quantum analogue. The irreducible polynomial representations of \(G\) are known as \(L(\lambda)\) where \(\lambda\) is a partition with at most \(n\) parts. Let \(S(E)\) be the symmetric algebra on the natural \(n\)-dimensional representation of \(G\). Factoring out the ideal generated by the \(p\)-th powers of elements of \(E\) one gets the `truncated symmetric algebra' \(\overline S(E)\). Let \(m\geq 1\). If \(L(\lambda)\) occurs as a composition factor of \(S(E)^{\otimes m}\) then it occurs in \(\overline S(E)^{\otimes m}\) if and only if the first part of \(\lambda\) is at most \(m(p-1)\). The main result of the paper gives a combinatorial characterization of the partitions \(\lambda\) for which \(L(\lambda)\) occurs at least once as composition factor of \(\overline S(E)^{\otimes m}\). -- The proof makes extensive use of the algorithm that implements the Mullineux involution of the set of `regular' partitions.
