Consider the process \(M_t = \exp\{- \xi_t\}\) where \(\xi\) is a pure jump subordinator. Then \(M\) can be represented as \(M_t = \prod_{0 < s \leq t} F_s\) with \(F_t = \exp\{-\Delta \xi_t\}\). Another process \(\hat M_t = \prod_{0 < s \leq t} \hat F_s\) is constructed, where condtionally given \(M\), \(\hat F_s = F_s\) with probability \(1 - p(F_s)\) and \(\hat F_s = 1 - F_s\) with probability \(p(F_s)\) for some function \(p\) with \(p(1) = 0\). \(M\) is called a fragmenter. In the case \(p(u) = 1 - u\), the process \((M,\hat M)\) is called a bifurcator. In this article, it is shown how the constructed processes can be used to describe exchangeable homogeneous fragmentation processes. Connections are made to bead splitting processes and to trees.
