The author shows new a priori estimates for the nonnegative solutions of the equation \[ u_t-\Delta u+|\nabla u|^q=0\quad \text{in } Q_{\Omega,T}=\Omega\times (0,T),\;T\leq\infty, \] where \(q>1\) and either \(\Omega=\mathbb{R}^N\) or \(\Omega\) is a smooth and bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) and \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega.\) In the case \(\Omega=\mathbb{R}^N,\) it is shown that each solution \(u\in C^{2,1}(Q_{\mathbb{R}^N,T})\) of the equation, without any growth condition as \(|x|\to\infty,\) satisfies the universal estimate \[ |\nabla u(x,t)|^q\leq \dfrac{1}{q-1} \dfrac{u(x,t)}{t}\quad \text{in } Q_{\mathbb{R}^N,T}. \] Moreover, it is proved in this case that the growth of the solutions is limited in space and time, that is, \[ u(x,t)\leq C\left( t+t^{-1/(q-1)}\right) \left(1+|x|^{q/(q-1)}\right)\quad \text{in}\;Q_{\mathbb{R}^N,T}, \] with a constant \(C\) depending on the initial data. In the case of a bounded domain \(\Omega,\) existence results are derived when the initial data are taken to be locally integrable functions or unbounded measures, and some nonuniqueness results are given when \(q>2\).
