      This work presents the dynamics of the free boundary that separates two incompressible fluids in a two-dimensional porous medium, known as the Muskat problem. The authors introduce a method that can treat the two-phase Muskat problem with two different viscosities, the Stefan problem, the free boundary problem for the incompressible or compressible Euler equations and it can be applied for arbitrary geometries of the fluid domains. After presenting several domain geometries, the following results are obtained: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize} \item[1)] \(H^2\) local well-posedness of the two-phase problem for the infinitely-deep Muskat problem or the confined Muskat problem under suitable assumptions; \item [2)] \(H^2\) global well-posedness and decay to equilibrium if the initial datum is periodic; \item [3)] local well-posedness for the one-phase Muskat problem; \item [4)] instantaneous smoothing of the solutions. \end{itemize}}
