The notion of Galois extension on a Hopf algebra was introduced by \textit{H. F. Kreimer} and \textit{M. Takeuchi} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 30, 675--692 (1981; Zbl 0451.16005)]; \textit{Y. Doi} and \textit{M. Takeuchi} [Commun. Algebra 14, 801--817 (1986; Zbl 0589.16011)] proved that, under suitable conditions, this is equivalent to the notion of cleft extension. This was generalized to Hopf algebras in a symmetric monoidal category by \textit{T. Brzeziński} [J. Algebra 215, No. 1, 290--317, Art. No. jabr.1998.7738 (1999; Zbl 0936.16030)] and for weak entwining structures by \textit{S. Caenepeel} and \textit{E. De Groot} [Contemp. Math. 267, 31--54 (2000; Zbl 0978.16033)]. All these results hold in an associative context; it is shown here how to generalize these results to the non-associative context of weak Hopf quasi-groups. Namely, Galois and cleft extensions associated with a weak Hopf quasigroup are introduced, and shown to be equivalent under suitable conditions. As consequences, a similar result holds for (weak) Hopf algebras and for Hopf quasigroups.
