The starting point of this investigation is a paper by \textit{U. Haagerup} and \textit{H. Schultz} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 109, 19--111 (2009; Zbl 1178.46058)]. The authors consider a diffuse finite von Neumann algebra \(\mathcal M\), with normal, faithful tracial state \(\tau\), and fix an element \(T\in\mathcal M\). They prove the existence of a decomposition \(T=N+Q\), with \(N,Q\in\mathcal M\), where \(N\) is normal, the Brown measure (see the work by \textit{L. G. Brown} published in [Geometric methods in operator algebras, Proc. US-Jap. Semin., Kyoto/Jap. 1983, Pitman Res. Notes Math. Ser. 123, 1--35 (1986; Zbl 0646.46058)] of \(N\) equals that of \(T\), and the operator \(Q\) is quasinilpotent with respect to the strong operator topology. Remark: In a note added in the proof, the authors mention the following. ``Theorem 27 (and, thus, also Theorem 8) can be more succinctly proved using an earlier result of L. G. Brown\dots'' (see [loc. cit., Theorem 3.6]), ``in particular, the analogue of Weyl's theorem in finite von Neumann algebras is Brown's result.''
