A holomorphic function \(F\) of one variable has a zero of multiplicity greater than \(k\) at \(0\) if the first \(k\) derivatives of \(F\) vanish at \(0\). Various quantitative versions of this basic statement amount to controlling the number of zeros of \(F\) in a small disc centered at \(0\), in terms of the size of its derivatives at \(0\). The goal of the article is to obtain analogous properties in the case of holomorphic maps \(F=(f_1,\dots,f_n)\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^n\). The authors introduce so-called multiplicity operators of order \(k\): those are differential operators \(M^{(k)}\) of order \(k\), associated with the ideal generated by \(f_1,\dots,f_n\), and such that the multiplicity of \(F\) at \(0\) is greater than \(k\) if and only if \(M^{(k)}(F)\) vanishes at \(0\) for all multiplicity operators of order \(k\). Quantitative statements extending the one-dimensional ones are then stated in terms of multiplicity operators. The authors also use their construction to obtain an estimate for the intersection multiplicity of Noetherian functions, or for the number of solutions of a Noetherian system.
