The paper is devoted to the uniform approximation property in the category of operator spaces. An operator space \(E\) is said to possess the uniform approximation property (briefly, OUAP) if there is a constant \(K\geq 1\) and a function \(k(n)\) such that, for every \(n\)-dimensional subspace \(M\subseteq E\), there exists a finite rank (completely bounded) operator \(T\in {\mathcal {CB}}(E)\) such that \(\|T\|_{cb}\leq K\), \(\operatorname{rank}(T) \leq k(n)\) and \(T|_{M}=\operatorname{id}_{M}\). To be precise, we write down that \(E\) has the \((K,k(n))\)-OUAP. It is proved that \((K,k(n))\)-OUAP is stable under ultraproducts. In particular, if \(E\) has \((K,k(n))\)-OUAP, then so does \(E^{**}\). The main result of the paper asserts that if \(E\) has \((K,k(n))\)-OUAP and \(E^{*}\) is a locally reflexive operator space, then \(E^{*}\) has \((K^{*}(m,\varepsilon),k^{*}(n,m,\varepsilon))\)-OUAP for all \(\varepsilon>0\) and all integers \(m>1\), and vice versa, where \(K^{*}(m,\varepsilon)=(1-1/m)^{-1}(((1+\varepsilon)K)^{m+1}+1/m)\) and \(k^{*}(n,m,\varepsilon)=m^{2/m}((1+\varepsilon)K)^{2+2/m}k(n)^{1+1/m}\).
