The authors prove the existence of weak global in time solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation on the real line with \(H^{-1}\) initial data, together with an apriori \(H^{-1}\) bound. They also study stability (orbital and asymptotic) of solitons in \(H^s\), \(s\geq -1\). The Miura transformation is used in an essential way to link the KdV equation to the modified KdV equation.
