Structured ring spectra provide a homotopical generalization of rings. Via the Eilenberg--Mac\ Lane spectrum construction, any ring \(R\) gives rise to a structured ring spectrum \(HR\). Various notions of extensions of rings have been generalized to structured ring spectra, for example in \textit{J. Rognes}' work [Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 898, 137 p. (2008; Zbl 1166.55001)]. In the paper under review, the author studies the question whether all extensions of \(HR\) in ring spectra of a given type come from extensions of \(R\) in rings of the same type. One main result is that for every \(G\)-Galois extension of \(HR \to B\) in commutative ring spectra with \(G\) finite, \(B\) is equivalent to \(H\pi_0(B)\). Under the assumption that \(B\) is connective and that a certain Künneth spectral sequence collapses, the author also establishes an analogous result about separable extensions \(HR \to B\). Formally symmetrically étale extensions are also addressed.
