The finite cell method is a combination of a fictitious domain approach with finite elements of higher order. The main idea is to embed the domain of the problem to be solved into a bigger domain that has a simple geometric shape and can therefore be readily meshed. In this paper, the authors present a rigorous analysis of the convergence properties of the finite cell method. It is shown that exponential type of convergence can be reached by the finite cell method for Laplace and Lamé problems. The numerical examples confirm the results of the mathematical analysis of the finite cell method.
