The classical Franklin system, as a first example of orthonormal basis in the space of continuous functions on the interval \([0,1]\), was introduced by Ph. Franklin in a paper published in 1928. Later on, for a partition \({\mathcal T}\) of the interval \([0,1]\) the so-called general Franklin system corresponding to the partition \({\mathcal T}\) has been studied by several authors obtaining interesting properties. In this paper the authors introduce and study a generalization of general Franklin systems to the whole real line. First of all, they extend the concept of the partition \({\mathcal T}\) from the interval \([0,1]\) to the whole real line. Then, the authors define general Franklin systems in the real line. Similarly to the case of the interval \([0,1]\), the notion of regularity of the partition \({\mathcal T}\) plays here an important role. Along of the paper the authors obtain some estimates for Dirichlet kernel of general Franklin systems. They prove some theorems about the locally uniform convergence of Fourier-Franklin series. Finally, the authors study properties of Franklin functions and establish the unconditional basis property of general Franklin systems.
