Let \(p\) be a fixed prime number. \(F_{p^m}\) denotes the Galois field of \(p^m\) elements, and \(\mathbb{Q}_{p^m}\) the unramified extension of \(\mathbb{Q}_p\) of degree \(m\) in a fixed algebraic closure \( \bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p\) of \(\mathbb{Q}_p\). \(\mathbb{C}_p\) denotes the \(p\)-adic completion of \( \bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p\) and \(\mathop{ord}\) the additive valuation on \(\mathbb{C}_p\) normalized by \(\mathop{ord} p = 1\). For a Laurent polynomial \(f(x_1,x_2,\cdots ,x_n)\in \mathbb F_p (x_{1}^{\mp},x_{2}^{\mp},\cdots ,x_{n}^{\mp})\). Denote by \(\hat{f}(x) \) the Teichmüller lifting of \(f(x)\) in \(\mathbb{Q}_p (x_{1}^{\mp},x_{2}^{\mp},\cdots ,x_{n}^{\mp})\). Let \(\chi:\mathbb{Z}_p \rightarrow \mathbb{C}_{p}^{*} \) be a nontrivial additive finite character. The \(L\)-function \(L^{*} (f,\chi,t)=\exp(\sum_{1}^{\infty} S_{m}^{*} (f,\chi)\frac{t^m}{m})\), where \(S_{m}^{*} (f,\chi)\) is a rational function of \(t\) over \(\mathbb{Q}_p (\varsigma_{p^{m_x}})\). Now for \(f(x) =x^d+ax \in F_{p^m} [x]\) \((a\neq 0)\), the authors of the article obtain the slopes of the Newton polygons of the \(L\)-functions of the exponential sums associated to \(f(x)\) for any nontrivial finite character \(\chi\). For \(\chi\) of order \(p\), their result recovers Zhu's genericity result [\textit{H. J. Zhu}, Am. J. Math. 125, No. 3, 669--690 (2003; Zbl 1033.11056)] by giving \(p\) an explicit bound. The general \(\chi\) case is based on improvement of results of Davis-Wan-Xiao [\textit{C. Davis} et al., Math. Ann. 364, No. 3--4, 1451--1468 (2016; Zbl 1348.11049)].
