Whenever \(\mathcal{A}\) and \(\mathcal{B}\) are families of subsets of a set \(X\), we say that \(\mathcal{A}\) \textit{refines} \(\mathcal{B}\) if for every \(A \in \mathcal{A}\) there is some \(B \in \mathcal{B}\) such that \(A \subseteq B\). Given a topological space \(X\), an operator \(r\) on the family of all open covers of \(X\) is said to be a \textit{monotonically Lindelöf operator}\,\, if for any open cover \(\mathcal{U}\) of \(X\) the assigned open cover \(r\mathcal{U}\) is a countable open cover of \(X\) and if an open cover \(\mathcal{V}\) of \(X\) refines \(\mathcal{U}\) then \(r\mathcal{V}\) refines \(r\mathcal{U}\). Spaces with a monotonically Lindelöf operator are said to be \textit{monotonically Lindelöf}. A linearly ordered topological space (LOTS, for short) is a triple \((X,\tau,\leqslant)\) where \(X\) is linearly ordered by \(\leqslant\) and \(\tau\) is the open interval topology on \((X,\leqslant)\). Generalized ordered spaces (GO-spaces, for short) are the spaces which are (homeomorphic to) subspaces of LOTS. Gruenhage has shown that Lindelöf first-countable GO-spaces are monotonically Lindelöf [\textit{G. Gruenhage}, Quest. Answers Gen. Topology 26, No. 2, 121--130 (2008; Zbl 1163.54017)]. In the paper under review, the authors characterize the Lindelöf GO-spaces which are monotonically Lindelöf. The main result of the paper is as follows: a Lindelöf GO-space is monotonically Lindelöf if, and only if, \(X\) has no subspace homeomorphic to a stationary subset of some uncountable regular cardinal and the closure of the set of all points with character \(\aleph_1\) is monotonically Lindelöf.
