The authors study a family of three-dimensional fast-slow systems with one fast and two slow variables whose slow manifold equals the critical set of the cusp catastrophe [\textit{I. Stewart}, IEEE Trans. Circuits Syst. 30, 578--586 (1983; Zbl 0534.58016)]. In a first step, they perform a normal form transformation for that family which is based on the formal normal form in [the first author, C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 353, No. 9, 795--800 (2015; Zbl 1334.34086)] and on Borel's Lemma [\textit{Th. Bröcker}, Differentiable germs and catastrophes. Translated by L. Lander. London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series. 17. London etc.: Cambridge University Press. (1975; Zbl 0302.58006)]. Then, they study the flow of the resulting system in a neighbourhood of the cusp singularity using geometric desingularisation, or ``blow-up'' [\textit{F. Dumortier} and the third author, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 577, 100 p. (1996; Zbl 0851.34057)]. Their main result concerns a precise asymptotic description of the exponential-type transition map past that singularity in terms of the slow divergence integral that is associated to the original fast-slow system. In the process, they refine and generalise the qualitative analysis previously performed in [the second author et al., J. Dyn. Differ. Equations 25, No. 4, 925--958 (2013; Zbl 1288.34051)].
