[\textit{B. Osserman}, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 56, No. 4, 1165--1205 (2006; Zbl 1118.14037)] greatly extended D. Eisenbud and J. Harris's theory of limit linear series, which had a huge impact on Brill-Noether theory and enumerative computations on moduli spaces of curves. For higher rank vector bundles, see [\textit{M. Teixidor i Bigas}, Duke Math. J. 62, No. 2, 385--400 (1991; Zbl 0739.14006)], [\textit{B. Osserman} and \textit{M. Teixidor i Bigas}, Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2014, No. 3, 720--744 (2014; Zbl 1348.14095)]. The goal is to prove (for a certain special line bundle \(L\) with \(\deg (L)=d\)) the existence of a stable (or semistable) rank \(2\) vector bundles \(E\) on a smooth curve \(X\) with \(\det (E)=L\) and \(h^0(E)\geq k\) and that the set of such \(E\) has a component with the expected dimension. Even the case \(L=K_X\) conjectured by [\textit{S. Mukai} in: Current topics in algebraic geometry. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press Math. Sci. Res. Inst. Publ. 28, 145--158 (1995; Zbl 0866.14024)] and [\textit{A. Bertram} and \textit{B. Feinberg} [in: Algebraic geometry. Papers for the EUROPROJ conferences held in Catania, Italy, September 1993, and Barcelona, Spain, September 1994. New York, NY: Marcel Dekker, Inc. Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 200, 259--269 (1998; Zbl 0945.14018)] (existence part) is not solved for all \(g,k\). Main Theorem of this paper: Fix \(g,d,k\in \mathbb {N}\) with \(k\geq 2\), \(g-2\leq d\leq 2g-2\) and either \(d\) even and \(4g\geq k^2+2k(2g-2-d)\) or \(d\) odd, and \(4g \geq k^2+4+2k(2g-2-d)\). Let \(X\) be a general curve of genus \(g\) and let \(L\) be a general special line bundle of degree \(d\). Then the stack of coherent systems \((E,V)\) with E a semistable rank \(2\) vector bundle \(E\) on \(X\) with \(\det (E)\cong L\) and \(V\subseteq H^0(E)\) a \(k\)-dimensional linear subspace is non-empty and it has an irreducible component of dimension \(3g-3-k(k-d + 2g- 2) +\binom{k}{2}\); if \((d,g,k)\notin \{(1,0,2), (2,2,2), (3,2,2), (4,6,4)\}\), then the existence holds for stable \((E,V)\). Pairs \((E,V)\) are called \textit{coherent systems}. No stable \((E,V)\) exists in the listed exceptional cases. This result was later generalized in [\textit{N. Zhang} J. Pure Appl. Algebra 220, No. 4, 1588--1654 (2016; Zbl 1435.14033)].
