A function \(f:[a,b]\to\mathbb R\) is said to be of bounded \(p\)-variation (in the Riesz sense), \(p\geq1\), if there exists a number \(M>0\) such that for every partition \(a=a_0<a_1<\dots<a_n=b\) of \([a,b]\), \[ \sum_{i=1}^n\frac{|f(a_i)-f(a_{i-1})|^p}{(a_i-a_{i-1})^{p-1}}<M. \] It is a celebrated result by \textit{F. Riesz} [Math. Ann. 69, 449--497 (1910; JFM 41.0383.01)] that the class of such \(f\), for \(p>1\), coincides with the class of all absolutely continuous functions \(f\) on \([a,b]\) with \(f'\in\mathrm{L}_p([a,b])\). In the article under review, the concept of bounded \(p\)-variation is considered in the variable exponent setting. Namely, let \(p:[a,b]\to[1,\infty)\), then \(f\) is of bounded \(p(\cdot)\)-variation, denoted \(f\in\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}\), if there exists a number \(M>0\) such that for every partition \(a=a_0<a_1<\dots<a_n=b\) of \([a,b]\) and every choice of tags \(x_i\in[t_{i-1},t_i]\), \(i=1,\dots,n\), \[ \sum_{i=1}^n\frac{|f(a_i)-f(a_{i-1})|^{p(x_i)}}{(a_i-a_{i-1})^{p(x_i)-1}}<M. \] The lower bound of all such \(M\)'s is denoted as \({\mathbf V}_{[a,b]}^{p(\cdot)}(f)\). Basic properties of the class \(\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}\) endowed with the Luxemburg seminorm, i.e., \[ \|f\|_{\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}}=\inf{\bigl\{\lambda>0:{\mathbf V}_{[a,b]}^{p(\cdot)}(f/\lambda)\leq1\bigr\}}, \] are verified. Namely, it is a Banach space, it contains all Lipschitz functions on \([a,b]\), and (for \(p\) everywhere \(>1\)) every member of \(\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}\) is an absolutely continuous function (Theorems 3.2 and 3.3). Next, if \(q\geq p\) are bounded functions the inclusion \(\mathrm{RBV}_{q(\cdot)}\subset\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}\) is a continuous embedding (Theorem 3.1). Moreover, a connection between the \(\mathrm{L}_{p(\cdot)}\) seminorm of \(f'\) and the \(\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}\) seminorm of \(f\in\mathrm{RBV}_{p(\cdot)}([a,b])\) is established (Theorems 3.4 and 3.5).
