The classical Bass Heller-Swan decomposition in algebraic \(K\)-theory is a formula that expresses the \(K\)-theory of the polynomial extension of a ring in terms of the \(K\)-theory of the ring and the Nil groups. The authors prove a general version of this decomposition for additive categories relative to a specific automorphism of the additive category. There are two versions of the theorem: one for nonconnective \(K\)-theory and one for connective \(K\)-theory in the case of an idempotent complete additive category.
