The noncommutative torus is a universal \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the unitary operators \(u\) and \(v\) subject to the relation \(vu=e^{2\pi i\theta} uv\) for a real constant \(\theta\). A very interesting analysis of the noncommutative tori based on the Gabor frames was suggested by \textit{F. Luef} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 139, No. 2, 571--582 (2011; Zbl 1213.42121)] and \textit{F. Luef} and \textit{Y. I. Manin} [Lett. Math. Phys. 88, No. 1--3, 131--161 (2009; Zbl 1175.42017)]. The authors of the paper under review apply the Gabor analysis to construct new classes of sigma-model solitons over the noncommutative tori. The paper is well motivated, clearly written and contains a helpful bibliography.
