This paper concerns the modular representation theory of the symmetric groups. A popular approach to this difficult subject is to consider blocks of small defect; blocks of defect 1 and 2 are quite well understood, though defect 3 is harder, despite the fact that we know that the decomposition numbers for such blocks are at most 1. The object here is to look at the structure of Specht modules, concentrating on their Loewy lengths and composition lengths. Although the results here are just for the principal block of \(\mathfrak S_{3p}\), it should be possible to extend them to blocks of defect 3 generally. One tantalising observation is that the largest composition length of a Specht module in the principal block of \(\mathfrak S_{3p}\) is 14, which may cause one to speculate about Catalan numbers. The paper is very well written; the author uses established combinatorial techniques for this subject, especially the abacus notation developed by James, and explains everything very well. Any researcher in this subject would benefit from reading this paper.
