    Contact structures on 3-dimensional (closed, orientable) manifolds \(M\) are investigated in this article with emphasis on the notion of open book decomposition for such manifolds. An open book decomposition of \(M\) is a pair \((B, \pi)\) consisting of an embedded oriented link \(B \subset M\), and a fibration \(\pi : M \setminus B \to S^1\) such that each fiber is the interior of an oriented surface with boundary \(B\). The main tool used here is the correspondence theorem of Giroux, which establishes a 1-1 correspondence between isotopy classes of contact structures and stabilization classes of open book decompositions. This paper is an exposition (only some sketches of proofs are given) of three articles of the author [``Tightness and open book decompositions'' (submitted); Geom.
