Let \(K\) be a complete discretely valued field with a non-trivial valuation whose residue field \(k\) is an algebraic extension of a finite field. \textit{R. F. Coleman} [Compos. Math. 72, No. 2, 205--235 (1989; Zbl 0706.14013)] introduced the notion of a wide open rigid curve over \(K\). He also introduced (jointly with \textit{K. McMurdy}) the notion of a semistable covering of a wide open rigid analytic curve \(W\) over \(K\) [Algebra Number Theory 4, No. 4, 357--431 (2010; Zbl 1215.11060)]. In this paper, a semistable formal model of \(W\) is constructed from a semistable covering of \(W\). Then, the \(\ell\)-adic cohomology of \(W\), for a prime number \(\ell\) different from the characteristic of \(k\), is described in terms of the \(\ell\)-adic cohomology of the irreducible components of the geometric closed fiber of a semistable model of \(W\) as constructed before. It is related to the homology and cohomology of the dual graph of that geometric closed fiber. Also relative versions are studied, i.e., finite flat morphisms of wide open rigid curves over \(K\) (compatible with semistable coverings) and their \(\ell\)-adic cohomology.
