The KPZ equation, introduced in [\textit{M. Kardar} et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, No. 9, 889--892 (1986; Zbl 1101.82329)], describes the evolution of the fluctuations of growing interfaces. It is conjectured to be \textit{universal}, in the sense that it is expected to arise as the scaling limit of the fluctuations for many discrete models, such as interacting particle systems. The first result in that direction was obtained in [\textit{L. Bertini} and \textit{G. Giacomin}, Commun. Math. Phys. 183, No. 3, 571--607 (1997; Zbl 0874.60059)], where it was shown that the fluctuations of weakly asymmetric simple exclusion processes converge to a solution of the KPZ equation. This work extends this result to a wider class of exclusion processes, with non-simple jumps. Unlike the simple exclusion process, these systems are not exactly solvable, i.e., we do not have exact formula for moments or correlation functions. The notion of solution to the KPZ equation is that the Cole-Hopf transform solves a stochastic heat equation. To prove convergence of the microscopic system, the authors introduce a discrete Cole-Hopf transform adapted to the particle system and show that it converges to a solution of a stochastic heat equation. Since the discrete model is not exactly solvable, the authors introduce new arguments to convert nonlinear terms at the microscopic level into gradient terms. This step requires some restriction for the hopping range of the non-simple exclusion process.
