Let \(S\) be a polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over a field \(K\) with the standard \(\mathbb{Z}\)-grading. For a homogeneous ideal \(a\), let \(A:=S/a\). The formal power series \(P_A(t,x)=\sum_{i,j\geq 0}\dim_K Tor_i^A(K,K)_jt^ix^j\) is called the \textit{Poincaré-series} of \(A\). Serre showed that \(P_A(t,x)\) is componentwise bounded above by the following rational series \[ \frac{(1+tx)^n}{1-\sum_{i\geq 1}\sum_{j\geq 0}\dim_K Tor^S_i(A,K)_jt^{i+1}x^j}. \] The algebra \(A\) is called Golod, if \(P_A(t,x)\) coincides with the upper bound given by Serre. In the paper under review, the author considers the Golod property for Stanley-Reisner rings and proves that a one-dimensional simplicial complex is Golod if and only if it is chordal. The main result of this paper shows that the Golod property of a Stanley-Reisner ring can depend on the characteristic of the base field. More precisely, Let \(T\) be a finite set of prime numbers, then there exists a simplicial complex \(\Delta\), such that \(K[\Delta]\) is golod if and only if \(char K\in T\) and also, there exists a simplicial complex \(\Gamma\), such that \(K[\Gamma]\) is golod if and only if \(char K\not\in T\). It is natural to ask whether the finiteness assumption is necessary in the main result. In other words, one could ask if there exists a simplicial complex which is Golod in infinitely many characteristics, and non-Golod in infinitely many other characteristics. The author gives a negative answer to this question.
