The concept of the going-down domain has been studied by \textit{I. S. Cohen} and \textit{A. Seidenberg} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 52, 252--261 (1946; Zbl 0060.07003)] and is fruitful in non-Noetherian commutative ring theory [\textit{D. E. Dobbs}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 39, 515--519 (1973; Zbl 0238.13019); Commun. Algebra 1, 439--458 (1974; Zbl 0285.13001); with \textit{I. J. Papick}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 54, 35--38 (1976; Zbl 0285.13002)]. The authors of the paper under review following this concept and introduce the concept of perinormality domains which fall strictly between Krull domains and weakly normal domains. A ring extension \(R\subseteq S\) satisfies going-down if whenever \(p\subset q\) are prime ideals of \(R\) and \(Q\in\mathrm{Spec }S\) with \(Q\cap R=q\), there is some prime ideal \(P\in\mathrm{Spec }S\) with \(P\subset Q\) and \(P\cap R=p\). Then an integral domain \(R\) is a going-down domain if for every (local) overring \(S\) of \(R\), the inclusion \(R\subseteq S\) satisfies going-down. An integral domain \(R\) for which the only local overrings that satisfy going-down over \(R\) are the localizations at prime ideals, are said to be perinormal. The concept of perinormality is closely related to Krull domains and authors of the paper under review establish basic properties of the class of perinormal rings. They also introduce and explore briefly the related concept of global perinormality, including a relationship with divisor class groups. There are some examples from geometry and number theory throughout the paper. They present a list of interesting questions at the end of the paper.
